The Arizona is the brand's two-strap sandal — the style that put Birkenstock on the map globally. It has a single buckle on each strap, a deep heel cup, and a cork-latex footbed that moulds to the shape of your foot over time. Mudge's Shoes stocks the full Arizona range across oiled leather, Birko-Flor, suede, nubuck and EVA uppers, in both regular and narrow widths, for women and men.

Women's Arizona Birkenstocks

Women's Arizona Birkenstocks are available in EU sizes 35–42. The range at Mudge's Shoes covers every mainstream material: smooth Birko-Flor for a low-maintenance daily sandal, oiled leather for a style that develops character with wear, and suede soft footbed for maximum underfoot comfort from the first day.

Women with wider feet wear the regular width. Women whose foot tends to shift sideways in sandals should try the narrow last. Popular women's Arizona colours at Mudge's Shoes include:

Antique White Suede SFB — a warm off-white with soft footbed lining
Basalt Grey Oiled Leather — a deep grey-green that suits earthy and neutral outfits
Cognac Oiled Leather — a warm tan that deepens with wear
Arizona Big Buckle Pure Sage and Sandcastle — the oversized buckle variant in muted tones

Men's Arizona Birkenstock

Men's Arizona Birkenstocks run from EU 40 to EU 50. Birkenstock uses a single EU size scale for both genders — a men's EU 43 and a women's EU 43 are the same physical sandal. Men typically shop the upper half of the EU range.

Men's Arizona sandals at Mudge's Shoes are available in oiled leather (Black, Cognac, Basalt Grey), Birko-Flor (Black) and EVA (Black). The EVA Arizona is the most practical choice for beach or water use. The Black Oiled Leather is the most versatile for everyday town wear.

Arizona Sandal Materials Explained

Birko-Flor

Birko-Flor is Birkenstock's synthetic upper material. It has a smooth leather-like surface, does not absorb moisture, and wipes clean easily. The material does not require conditioning and is suitable for people who want minimal maintenance. It is not vegan — it contains a small wool fibre layer — but Birkenstock labels its vegan alternatives separately.

Oiled Leather

Oiled leather is treated with wax and oil during production, which makes it more resistant to water and scuffs than standard smooth leather. The Basalt Grey Oiled Leather Arizona is the most distinctive colourway: a cool dark grey-green that sits between charcoal and olive. All oiled leather Arizona's soften and develop surface patina with regular wear. Condition with a leather balm every three to four months.

Suede and Nubuck

Suede and nubuck Arizona's are softer underfoot and have a matte texture. The Nubuck SFB Arizona  pairs nubuck uppers with a soft footbed for the most cushioned version of the sandal. Suede marks more easily than oiled leather — treat with a suede protector spray before first wear.

EVA

The Arizona EVA is a one-piece moulded sandal — the footbed, strap and sole are all EVA foam. It floats in water, dries in minutes and needs no care. It does not mould to your foot the way the cork footbed does, but it provides a consistent level of cushioning from day one. The EVA Arizona is the right choice for pools, beaches and water sports.

Vegan

The Arizona Desert Dust Vegan Indigo Blue uses synthetic uppers with no animal-derived materials. Birkenstock labels vegan products explicitly — if 'vegan' does not appear in the product name or description, the upper contains either leather or Birko-Flor with a wool layer.

Arizona Variants: Standard and Big Buckle

The standard Arizona has two slimline metal buckles. The Big Buckle Arizona replaces these with a single oversized square or round buckle on each strap. The footbed and sole are identical — the only difference is the hardware. The Big Buckle version suits people who want a more visible design statement. Available in Black, Cognac, Pure Sage and Sandcastle at Mudge's Shoes.

Width and Footbed: What to Choose

Birkenstock makes the Arizona in two widths and two footbed options:

Regular width: Suits medium to wide feet. The foot should sit within the footbed edges with 5–10mm of space at the front.

Narrow width: 5mm narrower across the toe box and instep. Right for feet that slip sideways or people who find the regular strap sits in the middle of its adjustment range.

Standard footbed: Cork and latex with a natural linen lining. Firm at first, moulds to your foot over two to four weeks. The most supportive option long-term.

Soft Footbed (SFB): Adds a micro-fibre cushion layer above the cork and a suede lining. Softer from day one. Same arch and heel support as the standard footbed — just more immediate cushioning.

Arch Support and Foot Health

The Birkenstock Arizona footbed has four anatomical features: a raised arch support, a deep heel cup, a toe bar at the front, and a slightly raised edge around the perimeter to hold the foot in place. These features promote natural foot alignment and help distribute body weight evenly across the foot.

People with plantar fasciitis, overpronation or flat feet often find Birkenstocks reduce end-of-day foot fatigue, but the firm cork footbed requires a break-in period. Wear new Birkenstocks for two to three hours on the first day and increase gradually — wearing them all day on day one will cause discomfort regardless of how good the fit is.
If you have a specific foot condition, confirm with a podiatrist before relying on any sandal as a therapeutic device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Birkenstock Arizona Birko-Flor and oiled leather?

Birko-Flor is a synthetic upper — it does not absorb moisture, needs no conditioning, and wipes clean with a damp cloth. It requires the least maintenance. Oiled leather is genuine cow leather treated with wax and oil during production. It is more durable over time, develops a patina with wear, and needs conditioning every few months. Both materials use the same cork-latex footbed and EVA sole. Choose Birko-Flor for ease of care; choose oiled leather for longevity and a natural material.

What is the Birkenstock Arizona Big Buckle?

The Arizona Big Buckle is a design variant of the standard Arizona. It replaces the two slimline metal buckles with a single oversized square or round buckle on each strap. The footbed, cork base and EVA sole are identical to the standard Arizona. The Big Buckle version is available in Black, Cognac, Pure Sage and Sandcastle at Mudge's Shoes. It suits people who want a bolder hardware detail while keeping the same anatomical fit and support.

Are Birkenstock Arizona sandals good for arch support?

Yes. The Birkenstock Arizona footbed has a built-in raised arch, a deep heel cup and a toe bar. These features are anatomically shaped to encourage the foot to sit in a neutral position, distribute weight evenly and reduce strain on the heel and arch. People with plantar fasciitis, flat feet or overpronation commonly find the Arizona reduces foot fatigue. However, the cork footbed is firm and requires a two-to-four-week break-in period. If you have a specific diagnosis, consult a podiatrist before using any footwear as a treatment.

What is the difference between regular and narrow width in the Birkenstock Arizona?

The narrow last is 5mm narrower across the toe box and instep compared to regular width. The footbed features, arch support and sole are identical in both widths. Regular width suits medium to wide feet — the foot should sit within the footbed edges with 5–10mm of space at the front and the strap should buckle somewhere in the middle of its range. If you find the strap sits at the tightest hole and your foot still shifts sideways, narrow width is the right choice. Both widths are available at Mudge's in selected colourways.

Does the Birkenstock Arizona EVA feel the same as the cork footbed version?

No. The EVA Arizona is a one-piece moulded sandal — the footbed, strap and sole are all EVA foam. It does not have the cork-latex anatomical footbed of the leather and Birko-Flor versions. The EVA provides consistent cushioning from day one with no break-in period, but it does not mould to your specific foot shape over time and does not have the same degree of arch and heel cup structure as the cork footbed. The EVA Arizona is the right choice for water, beach and situations where you want a lightweight, easy-clean sandal. For everyday walking and long-term foot support, the cork footbed versions are the better choice.
